[For Those Who Want to Ride More: Chomeiji Mountain Loop Option]
If purely flat roads leave you wanting more, try adding a loop around "Mount Chomeiji" from the Chomeiji area. It involves some ups and downs, but the spectacular views of Lake Biwa from a slightly higher elevation are absolutely worth it! It's a highly recommended detour that makes the ride even more enjoyable.
RECOMMENDED BIKES
1. Cross Bike (Hybrid Bike)
This is the most suitable bike for a route consisting of flat roads with frequent stops for sightseeing and cafes. The upright riding posture offers a wide field of vision, and the bike is easy to handle when you need to walk it, making it perfect for exploring the Hachiman-bori area or shopping at La Collina.
2. Aluminum Road Bike
Recommended for those who want a sportier feel while cruising the flat coastal roads, or those who want to enjoy the climbs and descents on the optional Chomeiji Mountain loop! A road bike allows you to lean forward and pick up speed more easily than a cross bike, making the 40km round trip to Azuchi feel light and breezy. It's an excellent stepping stone if your ultimate goal is to tackle the full Lake Biwa loop ("Biwaichi") in the future.
NOTES
"I want to try cycling around Lake Biwa, but I'm not ready for a long-distance ride yet," or "I want to enjoy local food and history, not just cycling!" If this sounds like you, the "Omihachiman & Azuchi Round Trip Route" is exactly what you need.
This route takes you along flat, easy-to-ride coastal roads straight to the historic streets of Omihachiman, famous as a filming location for samurai dramas. You can treat yourself to incredible sweets at the popular "La Collina Omihachiman" and even extend your ride to the Azuchi area, where the romance of the legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga slumbers. It's truly a "best of both worlds" cycling experience. If you decide to skip Nishinoko Lake and the Azuchi Castle Ruins, you can easily shorten the trip to a casual 30km ride.
To fully enjoy this route, a sports bike like a road bike or cross bike is ideal. If bringing your own bike is a hassle, renting one at "Giant Store Biwako Moriyama," conveniently located inside the Lake Biwa Marriott Hotel at the start of the route, is a fantastic option. You can show up empty-handed and rent a professionally maintained sports bike along with a helmet, ensuring even beginners can set off on their historical exploration with total peace of mind.
Let's head out on a well-balanced journey filled with the nature, history, and culinary delights of Lake Biwa!
